The Intersolar in Munich closed its doors last Saturday, leaving behind a trail of tired yet enthustiastic exhibitors as well as 410 news articles and press releases, according to Google News. In just four weeks, its sibling in San Francisco will kick off, “the largest trade event in the United States serving the complete solar energy supply chain,” as the organizers put it. Wilkins Ice Shelf has experienced further break-up with an area of about 160 km² breaking off. This animation, comprised of images acquired by Envisat’s Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) between 30 May and 9 June 2008, highlights the rapidly dwindling strip of ice that is protecting thousands of kilometres of the ice shelf from further break-up. This is the first ever-documented episode to occur in winter.

Back in 2004, Stephen Pacala and Rob Socolow of Princeton University, US, came up with the concept of “stabilization wedges”, a way of mixing and matching currently available technologies to cut carbon emissions by the amount needed to stabilize the climate. The paper was a reaction to what Pacala and Socolow saw as strategy to stall action on global warming by the Bush administration by claiming that the world lacked the technology to tackle it. While any one of today’s technologies alone is unable to meet the challenge, the pair showed that a portfolio of such solutions would be up to the job.

Die weltweit größte Fachmesse für Solartechnik, Intersolar http://www.intersolar.de, hat dieses Wochenende bereits zum neunten Mal ihre Pforten geöffnet. Dabei präsentiert sich die Veranstaltung zunehmend als Drehscheibe der globalen Solarbranche. Internationale Aussteller, vorwiegend aus Spanien, Österreich, Frankreich und China, nehmen einen Anteil von rund 50 Prozent ein und bescheren der Messe ein Größenwachstum von über 120 Prozent. Mit zunehmender Globalisierungin allen bereichen unseres Lebens ist es unbedingt notwendig, dass alle Bürger der Welt Mitspracherecht bei Entscheidungen der UN bekommen. Daher fordern Abgeordnete und Aktivisten eineParlamentarische Versammlung bei der UNO.

Mehrere hundert Politiker und Aktivisten der Zivilgesellschaft, unter ihnen 378 Abgeordnete von 70 Ländern, fordern in einem gemeinsamen Aufruf die Einrichtung einer Parlamentarischen Versammlung bei den Vereinten Nationen (UNPA). Angesichts der Globalisierung muss den Menschen in globalen Angelegenheiten eine stärkere Mitsprache ermöglicht werden, so das Dokument. Melissa Bowlin and Martin Wikelski investigated how much energy Swainson’s thrushes (see picture on left) are using at different wind velocities by having the bird fly in a wind chamber (see picture to the right). Below, Melissa describes their main results:

In an article recently published in the scientific journal PLoS ONE, Martin Wikelski and I showed that small migratory birds use more energy when storms are developing and when winds are high than when it is clear and calm. Since global climate change may affect the frequency and severity of storms and winds, climate change could have large impacts on the amount of energy these birds have to use during flight. (more…)

Herr Hölzenbein, was erwartet die Besucher an Ihrem Stand?
Unser bereits vielfach realisiertes und auch preisgekröntes Energiedach, eine effiziente und designstarke Dachlösung für Häuser, wird um eine solarthermische Komponente erweitert. Mit uns werden Hauseigentümer also noch unabhängiger, weil das SYSTAIC Energiedach jetzt neben Strom auch noch warmes Wasser generiert. Wie das genau funktioniert und welches Einsparpotential hiermit erreicht wird, zeigen wir am konkreten Dach, das mit diesem neuen Kombi-Konzept erstmals in München ausgestellt wird. Ihr Unternehmen ist bereits in zahlreichen Auslandsmärkten in Europa aktiv. Aus welchem Land erwarten Sie dieses Jahr die meisten Besucher?
