IRENA is ready to start

After 2 years of planning, IRENA’s founding conference will be held today in Bonn, Germany.

Irena – the International Renewable Energy Agency – will be the driving force for promoting renewable energies in all UN countries. The first time in human history, renewable energies will be the focus of an international governmental agency. The founding of this new agency gives the urgency of the energy and climate crisis a new face – the face of hope and possibilities, and the face of trust and cooperation. It will help bridge the gap between rich and poor countries, as IRENA is going to offer support to both industrialized and developing nations.

Its main tasks will be

to advice on policies on how to establish renewable energies most effectively in all UN countries. to promote technology transfer (an aspect that is still under difficult debate at the UNFCCC conference). The development of a clear and just path for technology transfer between rich and poor countries will be essential for a success at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen this December. to enhance capacity building. to facilitate transfer of information on any aspect of renewable energies. to support other agencies that work on developing and promoting renewable energies to promote cooperation among various international agencies that work on renewable energies.

Several further steps are necessary to make IRENA fully functional. But with the founding conference and the signing of the founding treaty the most important step will be accomplished.

We wish the new organization the best of luck, as the world needs nothing more urgently than finding the most effective and fast paths towards a sustainable and peaceful future without dependency on fossil fuels.
