Good news from the UK: the Kingsnorth Six were acquitted by a Crown Court jury.  They were members of a group of 23 Greenpeace volunteers who had attempted to shut down the Kingsnorth coal-fired power plant, specifically the six were the ones painting the smokestack with “Gordon Bin It” when interrupted by the police.  Their defense was ‘lawful excuse’, that they were protecting property of greater value (the Earth!) from the impact of climate change.  We will need our Mercedes-driving lawyer friends to tell us if the verdict has greater significance — but the jurors were common people, not politicians.  It was an impressive show — judge and lawyers with their white wigs — hopefully it has an impact. This report describes the insights of the American climatologist James Hansen from his trips to England, Germany, and Japan where he called for a moratorium on coal-fired power plants - unfortunately without success.

My “Dear Chancellor” letter was translated to German and about to be published in a German paper, but, upon advice of John Schellnhuber, science adviser to the German government, I removed the letter from my web site and withheld it from publication in Germany, instead accepting an invitation to speak with the Minister of the Environment, Sigmar Gabriel. That meeting occurred in June, with Schellnhuber and Stefan Rahmstorf in attendance.

I am grateful for Minister Gabriel’s generosity with his time, and I have no doubt about his sincerity in dealing with climate change. However, we did not come to a common understanding about the implications of geophysical boundary conditions on fossil fuels. The stark policy implication of the data, I assert, is urgency for a moratorium on coal-fired power plants. (more…)

Was ist noch einmal unser Ziel? 350. 350 ppm. 350 ppm CO2. 287 ppm ist mehr. Zu viel.

Allerdings ist 387 ppm kein Mittelwert, sondern “nur” der Maximalwert der globalen CO2-Konzentration im Monat Mai 2008. Insgesamt wird das Jahr 2008 im Mittel eine geringere globale CO2-Konzentration aufweisen. Außerdem muß betont werden, daß die Daten des letzten Jahres erst vorläufig sind, und noch kalibriert werden müssen. Die einzelnen Datenpunkte in der nebenstehenden Grafik von NOAA können sich also noch leicht ändern. (more…)

When I was young, Yankee Stadium had ~70,000 seats. It seldom sold out, and almost any kid could afford the cheap seats. Capacity was reduced to ~57,000 when the stadium was remodeled in the 1970s. Most games sell out now, and prices have gone up.

The new stadium, opening next year, will reduce seating further, to ~51,800. This intentional contraction is aimed at guaranteeing sellouts, increasing demand, allowing the owners, in pretty short order, to hike prices to double, triple, and more. The owners know that scarcity will fatten their wallets, even though it reduces the number of sales. This is more than a bit distasteful, as it discriminates against the lower middle class. Nevertheless, it should be a great stadium and as long as the owner is footing the bill without public subsidies for the stadium itself, we may have little grounds for complaint.

The reason that I draw your attention to this practice is that fossil fuel moguls are intent on hoodwinking the entire planet with an analogous scheme. (more…)

Predictably, as scientific evidence clarifies that the dangerous level of atmospheric CO2 is at hand, there are cries that it is impractical to avoid climate catastrophe. Such negativity is part of the playbook of those who stand to gain from business-as-usual. A recent report by the Scripps Howard News Service claims that I stated “we must reduce greenhouse gases by 80 percent within 12 years or it will be too late to prevent a climate catastrophe.” What nonsense. Neuerdings wird immer öfter berichtet, daß der Klimawandel nach Überschreiten von Kipp-Punkten außer Kontrolle geraten könnte. Sind diese Ansichten reine Panikmache, oder beruhen sie auf wissenschaftlich begründeten Erkenntnissen? Schön wäre es, wenn Ersteres der Fall wäre. Leider bewegen sich wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse auf einen Konsens zu, daß solche Kipp-Punkte nicht nur existieren, sondern daß wir schon gefährlich nahe an einigen dieser Kipp-Punkte sind, und vielleicht sogar schon einige Kipp-Punkte überschritten haben. Am 11. 3. 2008 wurde in den USA von Markey und Waxman ein Gesetzesentwurf vorgeschlagen, welches ein Moratorium auf alle neuen Kohlekraftwerke fordert, die nicht CO2 und andere Treibhausgase abscheiden und permanent speichern können. (more…)

Recent analyses indicate that the amount of atmospheric CO2 required to cause dangerous climate change is at most 450 ppm, and likely less than that. Reductions of non-CO2 climate forcings can provide only moderate, albeit important, adjustments to the CO2 limit. Realization of how close the planet is to ‘tipping points’ with unacceptable consequences, especially ice sheet disintegration with sea level rise out of humanity’s control, has a bright (more…)
