Healthy ecosystems and a continuous network of these ecosystems across large regions are essential for the ability of species to adapt to changing climates. Because we depend on many functions of ecosystems such as clean water and air, and carbon sequestration, nature protection is nowadays an essential part of adaptation to climate change. Biodiversity protection is therefore a very important aspect of any climate change policies.

Ökosysteme sind wesentlich, um das von uns - v.a. durch das Verbrennen von fossilen Treibstoffen - emittierte CO2 zu absorbieren, denn ca 43% alles von uns emittierten CO2 wird von Ökosystemen aufgenommen. Daher wird Naturschutz ein sehr wichtiger Teil des Klimaschutzes, und erhält dadurch eine noch höhere Relevanz als zuvor. Es ist ein großer Fortschritt, daß Naturschutz nicht nur “Ökofreaks” interessiert, sondern allgemein als wesentlicher Beitrag für unser Wohlergehn akzeptiert wird. Jedoch muß noch weit mehr für effektiven Naturschutz unternommen werden, auch um Arten eine Anpassung an den Klimawandel zu erleichtern bzw. zu ermöglichen.  Übrigens, nicht nur Deutschland hat in der Fläche von Naturschutzgebieten zugelegt, sondern ganz Europa, v.a. östliche Staaten, wie das Environmental News Network (ENN) berichtet.
